La Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Yale están investigando para lograr tener un diagnostico precoz a partir del análisis de la placenta. El estudio se centra en dos aspectos del órgano del que parte el cordón umbilical y que hace de enlace entre la madre y el feto: la presencia de pliegues irregulares y, sobre todo, una proliferación irregular de un tipo de células denominadas trofoblastos que provoca que estén presentes en zonas donde no deberían aparecer.
